Social Activities for Refugees
Find your place in the local community
New Citizens' Gateway believes that integration into a new country begins with connecting with the local community. To that end, we offer a variety of adult activities to help combat social isolation, promote mental and physical wellbeing and foster a sense of belonging in refugees and asylum seekers.
The Jasmine Women's Group
Our Jasmine Women's Group has been providing a safe and supportive space for asylum seeking and refugee women for nearly two decades. These weekly sessions are held at the Sacred Heart Church in Mill Hill and offer a wide range of activities, including:
- Social outings and gatherings – A chance to connect with others and build friendships.
- Creative Workshops – Engaging in photography and arts & crafts provides a fun and relaxing avenue for self-expression.
- Health and wellness resources – Gaining knowledge about health promotion and accessing essential services.
Participants' bus fares are reimbursed.

The Sowing Seeds Therapy Project
Launched in 2015 our ecotherapy program provides a unique opportunity for asylum seekers and refugees to connect with nature and improve their overall wellbeing. These sessions take place at an allotment site in Colindale and are run twice a week on Mondays and Fridays, between 10am and 2pm.
- Engage in outdoor activities – Gardening provides exercise, reduces stress and fosters a sense of accomplishment.
- Learn sustainable practices – Gain valuable skills in growing organic vegetables and seed-saving.
- Build social connections – Working and socialising in a green environment strengthens community bonds.
- Improve mental health – Spending time in and around nature has a proven positive impact on mental wellbeing, especially for individuals grappling with poor mental health.
- Health and Wellbeing Workshops
Recognising the importance of healthy living, particularly for families on a limited income, we offer regular workshops at the Colindale allotment. These informative sessions, led by volunteer nutritionists, cover topics like:
- Nutrition and healthy eating - Learn how to prepare nutritious meals.
- Mental health awareness - Gain knowledge about maintaining good mental health.
- Herbal remedies - Discover natural ways to promote well-being.
- Exercise and mindfulness - Explore techniques to improve physical and mental well-being.
