Case Studies
A Family Journey of Community Empowerment
Context: Hamid arrived in the UK as a refugee “like many others, I arrived with uncertainty, hope, and the desire to rebuild my life. One of the first things I wanted to do was give back, to say thank you, and to make a difference for others who are also trying to find their way.”
Intervention: Hamid joined NCG as a volunteer, interpreting across four languages, assisting with our youth football sessions, supporting cultural festivals, Iftar events, and clothes distributions. Inspired by his experience, Hamid’s sister and mother also joined NCG—his sister progressing into a sessional role before pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree, and his mother joining the Women’s Group and Allotment Project.
Outcome: Through volunteering, Hamid developed vital skills, gained confidence, and helped foster a profound sense of community belonging. His family’s engagement illustrates how NCG’s volunteer pathways empower entire refugee families to rebuild their lives, achieve independence, and support others. “New Citizens Gateway is a place that’s become like a second home to me.”
Coordinated Family Reunion Support
Context: In December 2024, NCG supported a vulnerable Afghan family of five fleeing severe trauma who reunited in the UK.
Intervention: Our Advice Team resolved complex eVisa issues to secure their legal status, established financial stability through successful welfare benefit applications, and completed GP and dental registrations. They enrolled the youngest child in a local school, supported the older children with Higher-Education applications, and enrolled one child into the NCG Youth Project’s ESOL course. The team also managed their council tax setup and successfully advocated for long-term housing through Barnet Council.
Outcome: The family is now legally settled, financially secure, engaged in local education and on a stable path toward long-term integration.
Overcoming Trauma and Rebuilding Voice
Context: Amir, a 34-year-old man from Turkey, arrived in the UK seeking asylum after surviving severe political persecution. He suffered from profound trauma, isolation, silenced by a lack of trust.
Intervention: Over multiple structured, non-judgmental bilingual therapy sessions, Amir learned vital tools to manage his acute anxiety and process his past. NCG wrapped further services around him, referencing him to our eco-therapy allotment project and English-language classes.
Outcome: Amir restored his sleep patterns, overcame his isolation, and gained the confidence to begin volunteering locally. In his final session, he shared: “Before counselling, I thought I had to carry everything alone. Now I know it’s okay to share the weight. This place gave me my voice back.”
Special Educational Needs (SEN) Advocacy
Context: A reunited refugee family from Kuwait sought support for their deaf child, Omar, a stateless Kuwaiti Bedoon who had been entirely excluded from formal education or specialist support prior to arriving in the UK.
Intervention: NCG navigated the complex Education, Health and Care (EHC) assessment process. We provided Arabic interpretation during critical Children Missing Education (CME) meetings to clarify historical barriers, arranged a health assessment, and coordinated directly with the local authority’s SEND team.
Outcome: The child was successfully granted an official school place. While awaiting placement, NCG secured one-to-one sign language lessons at home and signposted the parents to free sign language training to build unified family communication.
Neurosurgeon Spotlight
Context: Majid, a 31-year-old qualified trauma surgeon, fled militia threats in Libya and was housed in a Barnet hotel. Despite his frontline experience, he could not volunteer or progress within the NHS without the Occupational English Test (OET).
Intervention: NCG stepped in to support his re-credentialing pathway to become a practicing neurosurgeon in the UK.
Outcome: Majid is now simultaneously preparing for his OET and MRCS (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons) exams as part of our 12 month OET Programme. “I know what I want to do… all I need is some support from projects like this to help me achieve my goal. I can’t wait to get back to work and do what I love.”
Holistic Support for a Transgender Refugee
Context: Noor, a newly recognised refugee and trans woman from Kuwait, faced uncertainty regarding housing, financial stability, and accessing gender-affirming support services.
Intervention: NCG provided comprehensive guidance on housing options (including Depaul, YMCA, and New Horizon Youth Centre) and assisted with online welfare benefit applications. Advisers signposted her to specialist trans advocacy organisations and introduced our internal support, including counselling and NCG’s Women’s Group (which she decided she would like to access following medical treatment). NCG provided ongoing email reassurance and guidance to help her navigate these systems.
Outcome: Noor gained a clear understanding of her rights and entitlements, built confidence to access both mainstream and specialist services independently, and established a safe, stable foundation for her new life in the UK.
Tailored Opportunities to Belong
Context: Salma, a 28-year-old asylum seeker from Iraq, experienced severe isolation, anxiety, and low confidence, making it difficult to adapt to life in the UK or envision her future.
Intervention: NCG provided structured, empathetic counselling focused on trust-building, goal-setting, and mindfulness strategies. She was also integrated into our peer mental health workshops to build coping mechanisms and social connections.
Outcome: Over three months, Salma overcame her isolation, built a local support network, and grew in confidence. She began volunteering as a stepping stone toward a career in teaching, establishing a hopeful trajectory for long-term integration.
Housing & Eviction Prevention - Updated
Context: Amir a refugee client who had received support whilst living in hotel accommodation, faced immediate homelessness. Ineligible for priority council housing and lacking funds for a private tenancy deposit or advance rent, he had no safe housing options.
Intervention: NCG’s Refugee Adviser conducted a comprehensive housing assessment and completed an application on his behalf for Ash-Shahada Housing. The adviser submitted all required documentation and guided him on private rental platforms (e.g., SpareRoom) for long-term search options.
Outcome: Within three days, Amir was placed in emergency accommodation in Birmingham with dedicated keyworker support. The intervention successfully prevented street homelessness, enabled him to begin seeking employment, and established a path toward independent living.
Overcoming Language Barriers & Isolation
Context: Ashri, a newly arrived refugee from Sudan experienced severe isolation due to a language barrier and reached out to their support worker seeking English language classes to help her connect with the local community.
Intervention: NCG arranged a prompt assessment with the ESOL Manager and enrolled the client directly into English classes. Following supportive guidance in basic vocabulary, writing, and conversation, the client advanced into NCG’s specialised Trinity-accredited preparation classes, receiving expert, patient regular tuition in a welcoming peer environment.
Outcome: Ashri successfully passed their Trinity College examination, earned an official language qualification, built lasting local friendships, and gained the skills and confidence needed to integrate independently.
Homelessness Prevention for a Vulnerable Refugee
Context: A newly recognised refugee, Sara, living in asylum accommodation faced immediate homelessness after receiving an eviction notice following a grant of refugee status. She was particularly vulnerable due to severe physical health conditions and a history of torture.
Intervention: An NCG Outreach Support Worker provided intensive casework, assisting with an Integration Loan application for essential resettlement funds and completing a local authority housing application. To avert rough sleeping, the adviser advocated directly with the Housing Needs Officer, submitting medical evidence to emphasise the case’s urgency and risk level.
Outcome: Through NCG’s targeted advocacy, the local authority prioritised the client’s application, securing temporary accommodation before the eviction date. The successful Integration Loan provided crucial financial stability, safeguarding a highly vulnerable client and establishing a safe foundation for long-term recovery and independence.
